Screening Life Cycle Assessment: Swim Goggles

Objectives:

  • Complete a screening life cycle assessment (LCA) report that includes the goal and scope of a chosen system, impact assessment using LCA software, interpretation of the results, ideas to further reduce the impact and short reflection of the process

Project Duration: March – April 2024

Designed For: ‘Life Cycle Assessment in Design’ focus module, HSLU

Role: Student, Master’s in Eco-Social Design

Overview: A screening LCA report I completed for my Aqua Sphere Vista swim goggles. What’s included in the report: goals and scope of the assessment, life cycle inventory of the product, impact assessment (using Ecochain Mobius software), interpretation of results and suggestions to lessen negative impacts of product.

Over the past few years I have become familiar with the concept of LCAs and have mapped out the life cycles of products in a qualitative way, without numbers. I signed up for this focus module because I wanted to learn how to conduct a quantitative LCA. The product I chose for my screening LCA report is one that I had previously mapped out the life cycle for in a previous course: my Aqua Sphere Vista swim goggles. My intention was to build upon the qualitative research I had done and quantify the impacts of my goggles across its life cycle.
